Damien Hirst (* 7 June 1965 in Bristol) is a British sculptor, painter and conceptual artist and curator of individual exhibitions. In 1988, he organised the exhibition Freeze in London's waterfront, which is considered the birth of the Young British Artists phenomenon, and became the best-known representative of the group in the 1990s. He became known above all for provocative sculptures dealing with themes of death, religion, life or consumer culture. His best-known works include several animal carcasses preserved in formaldehyde and a human skull set with diamonds entitled For the Love of God.
